    Week of Snow

Author: Casey | Posted in: Home Life & Family

Caleb and Me in the SnowThis week we have had some very interesting weather. We woke up on Tuesday morning to a blanket of snow on the ground, which melted by Tuesday afternoon. Then on Wednesday, the temperatures were in the 60s. Finally, yesterday it snowed all day! It didn’t being to stick on the ground until around lunch time, but after that everything started looking so pretty.

When Caleb woke up from his nap, we all went outside to play! Grandma and Granddad came over to help us build a snowman. Caleb kept trying to tackle the snowman and knock him over! He’s a wild man! We had a lots of fun running around in the snow and throwing snow balls at each other. Caleb even threw a couple of snow balls at me!

I grew up in Houston, Texas, so I rarely ever saw snow. I do remember it snowing one time when I was a kid and my sister and I gathered up all of the snow in the front yard and back yard, and we had just enough snow to make a snowman about a foot tall! So, anytime it snows I always get pretty excited.

Now that we’ve gotten our obligatory snow for the year, I’m ready for spring. Bring on the warmer weather and the pretty flowers! Thank you God for all of the seasons!

    Praying for Rain

Author: Casey | Posted in: Random Thoughts, Spiritual

This has been a hot, dry summer for those who live in the state of Georgia. My parents and sister live in the Atlanta area and have mentioned on several occasions just how little rain they have received this summer. Everyone in North Georgia has even been banned from watering their lawns since the beginning of September. Aside from being a little concerned about the health of my dad’s lawn, I haven’t worried too much about Georgia’s lack of rainfall.

Last night on the news, Mary Beth and I saw that drastic measures are now being taken to try and conserve as much water as possible. Even after seeing this news, I wasn’t that worried about the people in Georgia. We now live in a day and age where drought doesn’t seem to affect our lives as much as in the past. We have all of the appropriate measures (reservoirs, water towers, etc) in place to store up water should a shortage occur. That’s why it never occurred to me to pray for rain.

Mary Beth and I were talking last night and she shared with me that when she and Caleb prayed together that night, they prayed for rain in Atlanta. I thought it a little odd that of all the things to pray for, they prayed for rain. After thinking about this for a while, it struck me that for some of my ancestors, praying for rain was a daily ritual. Farmers understand this much better than the rest of us. Their livelihood depends on God to provide rain to water their crops.

Thinking of all of this reminds me how much I depend on God for my daily existence. Whether I acknowledge it or not, God provides everything for me. Sometimes I think I shouldn’t trouble God about the little things in my life, but how wrong I am!

    Psalm 37:23
The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.

Just as I delight in every detail of my son, Caleb, God delights in our details. He just wants us to ask Him.

By the way, the forecast for Atlanta today calls for rain…

    Sleety Snow!

Author: Mary Beth | Posted in: Random Thoughts

We’ve been hearing talk of winter weather for days. That’s usually how it is in the south; the weather man mentions the word snow in passing, and we all get excited and stock up on milk and bread, only to be disappointed. But last night as I was leaving the grocery store (on a legitimate grocery trip, not a frenzied, snow-inspired, grocery run), it started. It was ever so slight at first, but as I pushed my buggy to the car it came down faster and faster. Suddenly I was overcome by giddy emotion; I wanted to laugh and cry; I wanted to link arms with my fellow buggy-pushers and swing around in circles. It continued to sleet/snow off and on throughout the night, and today was declared an official snow day!

Now, if you walked out of my front door, you probably would not be able to tell that it had snowed at all. The sidewalks are dry, the streets just look slightly damp, and you can only find the tiniest bit of accumulation in the shadowiest recesses of our yard. This is the saddest excuse for a snow day that I have ever seen, and I have seen some pretty pathetic snow days. But, in the south, we will take every opportunity to throw around phrases like “inclement weather” and “hazardous road conditions.” We love a good snow day, or even a bad one. So, to all of you Yankees out there who are rolling your eyes or chuckling under your breath, I say give us our snow days, even if they are only imaginary, and we will let you have your “heat waves.”

    SNOW UPDATE
A few hours after I posted the above, it started snowing big, white, fluffy flakes that were gathering up on the ground. We’ll see how long it lasts. May your winter be filled with safe and happy snow days!
