    Big News . . .

Author: Mary Beth | Posted in: Adoption, Home Life & Family, Spiritual

Prayer MagnetWe’ve been waiting for weeks to share our big news, and the time has finally come. After tons of prayer and thought, and sharing and praying with the people closest to us, we have decided to adopt a baby boy from Ethiopia.

Ever since I went with my parents to adopt my little sister from Romania when I was eighteen, I have known that I wanted to adopt someday. When we visited the baby orphanage in Romania I was overwhelmed by the rooms full of babies, rocking themselves because there was no one to rock them. Many of them no longer cried, because they knew no one would answer. It breaks my heart to know that my little sister was once one of those babies. At the older orphanage, the children ran to us the moment they saw us; the littlest ones climbed into my arms, clung to my legs, and called me “Momma.” I have never forgotten this. It is staggering to realize that there are over 143 million orphans in the world just like this.

We know that God has a heart for the fatherless; His word is full of instruction to care for the abandoned. In Deuteronomy, He continually reminds His people to provide food for the fatherless; Psalm 82 says, “Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and destitute. Rescue the weak and needy . . .” and James tells us that “pure and undefiled” religion is to care for the widows and orphans. We have felt God tug at our hearts, and we are finally answering.

Since we have decided to adopt from Ethiopia, we have been overwhelmed by the incredible need we see there. In 2005, the Federal Ministry of Health reported that Ethiopia has 4.8 million orphans. These children have lost their parents because of sickness and disease and because of the terrible famine that Ethiopia has suffered for so many years. Our adoption agency estimates that in Ethiopia three out of four people do not have enough to eat. It is overwhelming to think of how easily we could change a child’s life simply by bringing him into our home and giving him three meals a day.

Of course, we believe that we have much more to offer a child than proper nutrition. Our primary goal in raising this child, just as it is as we raise our son, Caleb, will be to share with him the love of Christ and to help him grow into a faithful man of God. We believe that one of the greatest resources we have to share with our new child will be our beautiful family and friends. Can you imagine the overwhelming love and joy that are waiting to greet this lonely child? It can only be compared to the overflowing grace and mercy that, because of Christ’s love and sacrifice, surround us, who were also once so lonely. In fact, we believe that there is no better metaphor for the gospel of Christ than adoption. When we had absolutely nothing to offer Him, Christ gave up everything to bring us into His family. As Ephesians reminds us, through Jesus Christ, God has adopted each of us as His sons.

Please pray for us as we begin this process. We are told that it will probably take 12-18 months for us to get our baby boy, and we will be traveling to Ethiopia to get him at that time. Pray for safety and health for our little boy, who is probably not even born yet. And please pray for Ethiopia; there is so much suffering there, and our hearts have been burdened by their pain.

We will have so much more to share as we travel this journey, so expect many more posts to come. We thank God that we have such wonderful friends to share our news with.

    Caleb the Crawler

Author: Casey | Posted in: Home Life & Family

Well, Caleb is now crawling. He’s been doing a little bit of crawling over the past couple of weeks, but over the past few days he’s really getting the hang of it. So, I thought I’d post a video for everyone to see.

I’m not exactly sure why I was in such a hurry to see him crawl. He used to just lie in one spot and play with his toys, but now you’ve got to keep an eye on him at all times. He’s so much fun to play with and we’re really enjoying being parents (most of the time!).

Leave a comment and let me know what you’ve been up to…

    Santa Comes Early

Author: Casey | Posted in: Home Life & Family

On Saturday night, we were over at our friends’ house and Caleb was playing in their son’s exersaucer. He kept bouncing and laughing like crazy!

After seeing how excited he was about bouncing, we started to think about getting him a bouncer for Christmas. We shopped around some of the different stores, looking for the best prices, but had decided to wait a little longer before buying one. Then last night, a shiny new Jumperoo showed up at our house! Santa must have brought Caleb an early present for being so good. ;)

After assembling the bouncer, Caleb proceeded to bounce non-stop for over an hour, laughing all the way!

    Little Giggler

Author: Casey | Posted in: Home Life & Family

Caleb has been giggling now for a couple of months, but Mary Beth and I have been unable to capture it on video before. On Friday night he was in a particularly good mood, and we finally got it on film!

He is growing up so quickly, so I want to be sure and capture as much on video as I can before he passes on to a new stage in his life. I think it will be neat when he’s older to look back at how cute of a baby he once was.

On another note, if any of you have some neat family/baby videos to share, you can post them on one of many video websites out there. Here are just a couple that I like:

If any of you have any family/baby videos you’d like to share with me, I’d love to see them! Let me know in the comments…

    Caleb’s New Trick

Author: Casey | Posted in: Home Life & Family

Caleb has learned a new trick this past week: high-pitched, ear-piercing squealing. :) It was pretty cute the first five or six times, but it started to get a little old after that!

There are some parents that think every thing their “little darling” does is just adorable. I guess it’s probably a good thing that we don’t think that. Hopefully this is just a phase and he’ll move on to less annoying sounds. :P

We also went to the lake this weekend and had a great time! It was nice to relax and do a little swimming. Caleb even got to float in the water a little bit with me; it was great fun!

On another note, I have TONS of video that is waiting to be captured and put online for family to see. The only problem is that I don’t have enough hard drive space to do it just yet. We’re saving up for a pretty sweet drive, so hopefully I’ll be able to post some videos soon…

    Great Grandparents

Author: Casey | Posted in: Home Life & Family

    null

Caleb got to meet his first set of great grandparents last night. My paternal grandparents drove down yesterday to meet Caleb and it was wonderful to see them meet for the first time. My grandma held him for so long that I didn’t think she was going to let grandpa hold him, but she finally gave in! :)

    » See some photos

It’s really been wonderful to see everyone’s first reaction when they meet Caleb. Some people just sit back and quietly take in all of his features, while others just ooh and awe as they proceed to make baby noises at him.

Well, we’re all going up to the cabin for the Memorial day weekend and I’m REALLY excited! I’m looking forward to relaxing, playing a little golf, doing some swimming, and showing Caleb the river. We’re just going to have a great time!

If any of y’all have any weekend activities planned, let me know about them in the comments!

    Caleb Goes to Church

Author: Casey | Posted in: Home Life & Family, Spiritual

    null

The day started off with Caleb and me making Mary Beth breakfast in bed with roses. Everyone was hungry, so we all decided to share the Mother’s Day meal of bacon, eggs, toast, and OJ. :P

After breakfast, we all got ready to go to church. Caleb looked so cute in his little baby gown and he was definitely ready for his first outing since the hospital. We arrived at church just a few minutes late, and Caleb definitely got the “rock star” treatment. Mary Beth’s parents had saved us a couple of seats near the front and everyone at church just kept staring at him like he was the first baby they had ever seen! Well, he probably wasn’t the first baby they’d seen, but he was definitely the cutest! :P

Near the end of the church service I got up, introduced him to the church, and had one of our elders pray over him. It was a very special time that I don’t think I’ll ever forget.

Later, I found out that I wasn’t the only proud one that wanted to show off Caleb. My dad somehow found a way to slip Caleb into his Mother’s Day sermon. He’s only two and a half weeks old and he’s already famous nationwide!

After church we went over to Mary Beth’s parents’ house and had a great Mother’s Day dinner. After that, we finally went home and crashed…

After knowing Mary Beth for almost 7 years, it’s been such a blessing to see what a wonderful mother she is becoming. It makes me so proud to be her husband…

To all the moms out there…HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

    Bath Time

Author: Casey | Posted in: Home Life & Family

nullWell, in case no one told you, we’re back home. Mary Beth and Caleb were released from the hospital on Saturday morning and we haven’t slept since! (Just kidding) Mom and baby are doing just fine and he’s sleeping and feeding as good as we could have hoped.

Caleb got his first bath at home today and he did not like it. He pretty much bawled through the whole thing, but can you blame him? If someone stripped you naked, put a luke-warm wash cloth on you, and started scrubbing vigorously, would you like it? I didn’t think so…

Mary Beth is doing an AMAZING job as a first time mom. I can testify that the concept of maternal instinct is definitely a real thing because she has it! I’d also like to think that I might have a little bit of paternal instinct, if there is such a thing. :P

Seriously though, I always thought our home life could not get any better. The birth of our son has exceeded my wildest expectations. The whole experience has given me such a thankful and loving heart.

I’ll be praying for all you first time parents out there, it definitely takes a little getting used to…

    Another Day at the Doctor

Author: Casey | Posted in: Home Life & Family

Today we had another Doctor’s appointment. It was basically the same as all of the other ones, but this time I was able to record Caleb’s heartbeat using Mary Beth’s new phone (The quality is only so-so). He sounds stronger than ever!

Not only is his heart strong, but we’ve been figuring out that his legs are even stronger! He’s really been moving and kicking a lot more than usual lately. Last night, he made Mary Beth double-over with one of his monstrous kicks. He’s pretty crazy…

Well, without further ado, Caleb’s Heartbeat:

    Boy or Girl?

Author: Casey | Posted in: Home Life & Family

That’s what everyone keeps asking us and we still don’t know yet. The good news is that we will find out on December 6th, but for now we can only guess. My wife has a feeling that it’s a girl, but I couldn’t tell you either way. Some people say that if the heartbeat is above a certain number then that means it’s a girl, but of course that’s just an old wives’ tale. (Who are these old wives that just sit around making up stuff anyways?)

At this point we don’t really have a preference, but in the end we just want to know to that it’s a healthy baby. I think it would be really fun to have either a boy or a girl. Let’s hash out the advantages of each:

    Boy:

    • Wrestling partner
    • Carry on the family name
    • Future golfing buddy
    • Don’t have to pay for the wedding :)
    • Father/son camping trips

    Girl:

    • Much cuter
    • Daddy’s little girl (Need I say more?)
    • Father/daughter dates
    • Someone to play “dress up” with

I guess we’ll all find out on December 6th
