Meet My New Friends
Author: Casey | Posted in: Adoption, Travel
Mary Beth and I arrived in Addis this morning to be greeted by our friendly driver, David. He took us to our hotel and gave us some tips about Ethiopian culture and some other very good practical advice about our stay.
After checking in at our hotel, we called one of the field coordinators who works for the organization that we sponsor a child through. He picked us up to take us to visit Bete (pronounced Betty) and also bring some gifts to the other children at the orphanage.
When we arrived at the orphanage, there were many children outside swarming one of the caretakers who was passing out candy. It was out of control! At that point, we decided it would be better for the staff to pass out our gifts for us in an orderly manner. The children seemed very happy to receive their small gifts (candy, stickers, and bracelets).
Later on, we found out that Bete had been adopted by a German family! Praise the Lord! It was a little sad that we did not get to meet her, but we are so overjoyed that she now has a family of her own!
After giving the children their gifts, we went into one of the baby rooms at the orphanage. I will never forget all of the children lying in their cribs in this room. Some of them were only six months old, but they could hold their own bottle. They’ve obviously learned that skill to help them survive. I think I will remember these children’s faces for the rest of my life.
One of the things that seemed to be a big hit with the older kids was taking pictures of them. I would take their picture and then show it to them on the camera display afterwards. They LOVED it! This was really the best way for me to bond with the children, since we couldn’t really understand eachother. This was how I met my two new friends: Brook and Musa.
I saw Musa standing a few yards away from me and I motioned with the camera to see if he wanted me to take his picture. He smiled bashfully and I snapped a shot of him. Afterwards, I told him my name and we shook hands.
I saw one of the older boys, Brook, standing quietly on the steps looking on at all the commotion. I walked over to him, took his picture, and we shook hands. He had one of the brightest smiles I’ve ever seen.
During the rest of our visit, these two boys never left my side. Musa would reach down and hold my hand, and I would put my arms over their shoulders. I could tell that they were soaking it all up.
Eventhough I was only with these boys for less than an hour, I could realize how much they long to have a father. My heart aches for these millions of Ethiopian boys that will grow up without one. I wish we could adopt all of them, but God has a special boy picked out just for us.
Tomorrow we will meet Josiah for the first time. It will be an honor to be called his ‘abaya’ (father). Thanks for all your prayers and encouragement!

Follow Our Adoption Travels
Author: Casey | Posted in: Adoption, Home Life & Family, Travel
Early Sunday morning, Mary Beth and I will be flying out to Ethiopia to go get our son, Josiah. This is the culmination of a lot of prayers, planning, worrying, paperwork, and waiting that we’ve been experiencing over the past year. We are overjoyed at the thought of getting to hold our boy within the week!
We wish that we could take all of our friends and family on this journey with us, but we realize that that’s not a possibility. We know that God is going to open our eyes to the poverty and need of Ethiopia while we’re there, and we want everyone that we know to share that experience with us.
Here are a few ways that you can share in our journey to bring home Josiah:
- Follow us on Twitter: @marybethpick and @caseypicker
- Friend us on Facebook: Mary Beth & Casey
- Subscribe to our FriendFeed
- Subscribe to our blog
- Chat with us on Skype using the button below. Skype username: caseypicker
Hopefully that will give everyone enough ways to share in this life changing experience with us while we’re there. We can’t wait for all of you to meet Josiah when we return home on the 31st. Please pray that our travel will go smoothly and safely. Thank you for all of your love and support throughout this entire process. Praise the Lord! -

From Disobedience to Donuts
Author: Casey | Posted in: Home Life & Family, Parenthood
Mary Beth and I have been struggling to come up with incentives to help Caleb obey. It seemed like whatever punishment or reward we would try, he just wasn’t interested in being obedient. After thinking on the matter for a while, we decided to come up with a “Behavior Chart.” For every day he is obedient, he can get up to two stickers on his chart: one for the morning and one for the afternoon. We let Caleb come up with what kind of reward he would get when he reached three stickers. Being my son, he decided on a reward involving food, specifically donuts.
Well, last night Caleb reached the ultimate goal: three stickers! Caleb requested to ride in daddy’s fast “race car” on the way to the donut shop. So, this morning we set out on a mission in my “fast race car” to find donuts. After unsuccessfully reaching two closed donut shops, we finally found one that was open and enjoyed our breakfast together.
I’m very proud of my boy for learning to be more patient and slow to anger. I pray that God will continue to work in his heart to someday become the man that God wants him to be. I’m so thankful to be his dad.

No TV?!?
Author: Casey | Posted in: Parenthood
Mary Beth and I have always tried to carefully limit the amount of TV that Caleb watches, but still too often find ourselves using the TV to give us a break from parenting. I recently read a blog post about some parents who found themselves too far down that road and how they struggled to change their family habits. She made an interesting point about how TV can rob us from doing the things that God wants us to do with our time. We want our family to try and have a very balanced approach to our entertainment habits because we think God wants us to enjoy some time off every now and then, but He doesn’t want it to consume all of our time. What do you think?

Fireproof
Author: Casey | Posted in: Home Life & Family, Spiritual
Last night, Mary Beth and I saw the movie Fireproof, which was filmed by the same people who did Facing the Giants. I wasn’t a huge fan of Facing the Giants (I thought the message was good, but the acting was bad), so I was a little skeptical about this movie before I saw it.The first 15 minutes of the movie confirmed my suspicions with bad acting and cheesy lines, but after that it started to get really good. The basic storyline is about a couple whose marriage is crumbling and they have “fallen out of love.” The husband, played by Kirk Cameron, gets advice from his father about what to do save his broken marriage. He then proceeds to follow that advice, even though the feelings of love are gone.
I won’t spoil the movie for anyone, but I think every couple should go see this movie. Whether your marriage is struggling or maybe just a little stagnant, I really believe that every marriage can benefit from seeing this movie.
So, husbands, take your wives out on a date this week and go see this movie. You will not be disappointed.

Lamplight Media
Author: Casey | Posted in: Cool Sites, Tech, Work Life
Since I was in High School, I’ve been interested in developing websites. Over the last few years I’ve done web development work on the side as a hobby for a few different churches and companies, which I’ve extremely enjoyed.A couple of months ago, a friend of mine, Zach Cheatham, and I decided to start a web design business together. I’ve always had a passion for web development, and Zach has an amazing talent for graphic design. I feel that our unique gifts will enable us to provide a broad range of services to our clients.
Our main goal is to enable churches and small businesses to have engaging websites that are easy to maintain and update. In working with churches, my experience has shown me that most churches don’t have a staff member who knows how to maintain and update a complex website, which is why I feel a company like Lamplight Media is needed to help fill this void.
Most people visit a church’s website long before ever stepping foot in their building. Although there are many high quality church websites today, the majority of church websites aren’t very inviting. Which is why I believe that churches need to view their website as an outreach tool, instead of just an informational tool. I hope that our work is able to help draw people to churches and consequently to Christ.
Our company, Lamplight Media, just launched our newly designed website today. I’m very excited about this new venture and pray that God will give us success as we work hard to develop a great product for our clients.
Please feel free to share our information with any churches or business that are looking to build or update a website. Thanks!
