Holy Discontent

Author: Mary Beth | Posted in: Adami Tulu, Living Radically

Casey and I just had a much needed weekend away in Chicago. We drove up on Thursday and spent Friday morning in Wheaton with my brother and future sis-in-law. Then we headed to a Lifesong for Orphans conference with our great friends Aaron and Cacey Klein, and many others.

It was a packed weekend with meetings, planning, praying, shopping, and lots of coffee. We spent hours discussing our dreams for Lifesong’s schools in Ethiopia. It was so fun to spend several days with great friends who live across the country but share our heart and passion for Ethiopia and orphan care. There is an incredible bond between people who are filled with the same passion. We loved getting to continue these relationships and make new ones.

One of my favorite parts of the weekend was getting to hear about what God is doing through all the Lifesong projects around the world. As we sat and listened to a dozen or so people share about their part in God’s Kingdom work, I was reminded how thankful I am that God has called me out of the bubble I used to live in, and that He has given me this great work to do and these amazing people to do it with.

Lifesong VP Andy Lehman called us to act on our “holy discontent” and to use our passion to make a difference in this world. I think “holy discontent” is the best term I’ve heard to describe how I’ve felt for the last few years. I’ve been consumed by a “holy discontent,” a passion and a yearning to see justice for the fatherless. I really believe that God is calling us all to a particular mission on this earth. What is your “holy discontent,” what is your God-given mission on this earth?

As Frederick Buechner so eloquently put it, “Your vocation is that place where your deep gladness meets the world’s great hunger.” You have something powerful to offer that the world needs deeply. You are God’s agent, God’s kingdom builder on this earth. I want to encourage you that if you haven’t found your “holy discontent,” if you’re not fulfilling God’s mission for you: FIND IT, DO IT. There is no greater joy in this world than joining Jesus in the work He has designed for you.

I am so thankful that you have found yours!  What a difference it makes in the richness of life to have that purpose and passion for Christ and a way to channel it to the world!  We are always praying for you and Casey and we could not be any prouder of you both!

Thank you for this! Loved it!

Loved our time together last weekend. There definitely is an unexplainable bond between those who share the same “holy discontent”.
